Dog Gets Rescued By Coast Guard After Surviving In a Shipping Container For 8 Days With No Food

A dog was found and rescued by a team of US Coast Guard marine inspectors during a routine inspection of shipping containers at the Port of Houston.

U.S. Coast Guard Heartland reveals on Facebook that four of their marine inspectors were busy randomly selecting shipping containers to inspect on Wednesday, January 31.

“Suddenly, they heard barking and scratching coming from one of the containers in a stack. When they lowered the container and opened the door, a dog popped out!”

The Guardian reports that a crane was used to bring the container to the ground in order to rescue the dog.

US Coast Guard officer Ryan McMahon tells the Associated Press, “As soon as we opened it, we could see the little dog’s face poking out. She was right there, like she knew we were going to be there to open it for her. And she just, she wasn’t scared or anything.”

“She just seemed happy more than anything, to be out of that dark space and in the arms of people that were going to take care of her,” McMahon added.

The marine inspectors later found out that the sweet pooch, later nicknamed ‘Connie the Container Dog’, has been trapped in the container for at least a week, with no food or water.

McMahon described Connie as a little dirty and “definitely pretty skinny” when they found her.

“The Coast Guard members gave her water and brought her to a local animal shelter for further care,” the U.S. Coast Guard Heartland wrote.

McMahon and the three other inspectors then drove Connie to the Pasadena Animal Shelter where they immediately got her checked.

Pasadena Animal Shelter didn’t forget to thank the marine inspectors for saving the pooch. They wrote, “Let’s salute the heroes who not only safeguard our waters but also rescue precious souls in need.”

Currently, Connie has been taken by the rescue group ‘Forever Changed Animal Rescue’ as a foster and are working to get her healthy again.

While the rescue group is working to get Connie healthy, interested adopters for the sweet pooch can visit https://www.pasadenatx.gov/153/Adoptions and fill out an application form with Animal ID 168752.
